{"id":808,"date":"2017-11-10T17:20:24","date_gmt":"2017-11-10T17:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stadiasportsmedicine.com\/info\/?p=808"},"modified":"2017-11-10T17:20:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T17:20:24","slug":"acute-hamstring-injuries-in-swedish-elite-football","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stadiasportsmedicine.com\/info\/2017\/acute-hamstring-injuries-in-swedish-elite-football\/","title":{"rendered":"Acute Hamstring Injuries in Swedish Elite Football:\u00a0 A Prospective Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial Comparing Two Rehabilitation Protocols"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><u>Why you should pay attention to this<\/u><\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0 Muscles can be strengthened through shortening or lengthening contractions.\u00a0 Hamstring lengthening exercises done in the preseason have been shown to reduce in-season injury in soccer players.\u00a0 Lengthening (or eccentric) exercises have a higher potential for muscle soreness, since they are causing what is essentially controlled microdamage of the muscle.\u00a0 This study looks at the application of lengthening exercises to the hamstring in a physical therapy setting, after injury has already occurred.\u00a0 The study population was elite Swedish soccer players with an MRI-verified hamstring injury.\u00a0 These players were randomly assigned into one of two groups:\u00a0 Traditional hamstring rehabilitation or an eccentric (lengthening) program.\u00a0 The time from date of injury to start of therapy was similar for both groups.\u00a0 This study showed that athletes in the therapy program that emphasized muscle lengthening returned to sport more quickly \u2013 an average of 28 days as compared to 51 days in the standard rehab protocol.\u00a0 Patients who were MRI negative returned in an average of 6 days.\u00a0 In all, this provides strong evidence that lengthening exercise protocols are not too much for an injured athlete to tolerate, and do result in a more rapid return to play that usual rehab.<\/p>\n<p>If you have injured your hamstring, or simply want to start an exercise program that should reduce your risk for injury going forward, give us a call at (515) 221-1102.\u00a0 We\u2019re happy to help.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure your hamstring injury is treated properly.\u00a0 Lengthening exercises (used at Stadia) perform better than standard ones in PT.
